Energy Regulation: Do You Know If Your Building Has to Comply?

If you recently received an email from Denver or Colorado about energy regulations and found yourself wondering whether your building has to comply, you are not alone.
Many building owners and property managers first hear about these requirements through a deadline notice or compliance email. It can cause panic. Others have been managing the process themselves but are still unsure if everything has been submitted correctly, or whether new requirements now apply.

We speak to building owners every week asking questions like:

  • Does my building actually have to comply, or did I already take care of this?

  • Have the rules changed, or is there a new requirement I missed?

  • Is there a difference between Benchmarking, Data Verification, and Building Performance?

  • Does compliance mean I have to immediately rip out gas systems?

These programs can be complicated. There are multiple aspects of compliance, including Benchmarking, Data Verification, Building Performance requirements, local building codes, EUI targets, and long-term compliance pathways. There are also different deadlines and different programs depending on your building, location, size, and use type.
The good news is that compliance does not always mean immediate major upgrades or expensive renovations. In many cases, the first step is simply understanding where your building stands and whether the current setup is accurate.
This matters because building details, utility data, property use types, and ENERGY STAR setup can all affect your compliance position. If these items are incorrect, your building may appear to perform worse than it actually does. You may be working toward a target that is harder than it needs to be!
Rest assured. You do not need to become an expert in energy regulations to keep your building compliant. Our role is to help building owners understand:

  • what requirements apply to their property

  • whether current submissions are complete and accurate

  • whether their building data is set up correctly

  • what upcoming deadlines exist

  • what long-term compliance options are available

  • if there are options to make their compliance pathway easier to reach

Many owners come to us simply looking for peace of mind. They want to know whether everything has been done correctly, what they may be missing, and whether there are opportunities to improve their compliance position moving forward.
Our team helps building owners navigate Energize Denver and Colorado Building Performance requirements through services including:

  • Benchmarking

  • Data Verification

  • EUI analysis

  • long-term compliance planning

If you are unsure where your building stands or just want peace of mind, we would be happy to help review your situation and outline practical next steps.
