Colorado is ranked as the most active state in the U.S, with only 16.7% of residents not partaking in exercise outside of their regular job. Results from a recent study initiated by Governor John Hickenlooper, showed that the majority of people in Colorado not only own a bike, but they get out and use it. Being a cyclist in Colorado is not just a niche activity; it is a means of transportation, supports a healthy, active lifestyle, substantially supports local businesses, attracts jobs and tourists and makes communities more viable. We also know that cycling releases happy chemicals like serotonin and dopamine into the bloodstream. Serotonin is the mood neurotransmitter responsible for positive feelings and self confidence and dopamine helps us feel motivated and feel good about ourselves. However, it’s an incredibly expensive sport to take up. The material, parts, and gear alone are costly, but the annual service can easy match that of your vehicle. The residents of Colorado seemingly push past the cost factor more than most and with the astounding percentage of active cyclists in the state it’s no wonder the founder of The Pro’s Closet, Nick Martin, planted his flag in Colorado to offer the prevalent cycling community a whole new experience.
In 2006, Nick was an aspiring professional mountain bike rider living a less than lavish lifestyle while following his dreams. That year, Nick purchased three vintage Volkswagen buses and began parting them out on eBay along with most of his personal possessions to keep reaching for his goal of pro riding. Before long, Nick was driving around the country helping his fellow pro mountain bikers adopt his minimalist lifestyle and even assisted them in selling some of their belongings in an effort to continue following their dreams. Thus The Pro’s Closet was born out of Nick’s trailer and the belief that ownership is only temporary. Nick inspired an entire community to view their cycling passion in a whole new light.
The Pro’s Closet has grown into an e-commerce giant and now operates out of a 137,000 square foot facility located in Louisville, Colorado which houses 3,000 bikes, nearly 8,000 parts and accessories, a retail space, warehouse and showroom. The company has also become the first of it’s kind to offer its certified pre-owned program which is designed to encourage riders to continuously upgrade their bikes with the latest technology, trends and cycling styles to get the most out of that happy chemical release that cycling offers.
It may sound like Nick Martin tackled his dreams with ease, however it took quite a bit of planning, strategy and in-depth understanding of this brand-new business
model for our team of engineers to turn this dream into a reality. The machine that is Pro’s Closet required a warehouse to manage the massive influx of incoming and outgoing shipments of parts, cycles and gear; a space to store the generous inventory of road bikes, mountain bikes, triathlon bikes, and sport bikes available for purchase; a refurbishing department where pre-owned bikes are put through a stringent process of inspection, repair, and service which even includes a bicycle wash station; as well as office space for the nearly 100 employees on site. Today the pilot store, also referred to as the Denver Metro area’s largest bike shop, is seeking to expand and open a second Colorado location, with further plans to expand across the country to other cities that can greatly benefit from this revolutionary cycling concept.
The Pro’s Closet belief is that bikes are meant to be used, and we are so proud to have been a part of this passion project for Nick, his team, and the bicycling community throughout Colorado. We truly believe The Pro’s Closet is changing the cycling industry and opening the doors of opportunity for all cyclists to experience the benefit and satisfaction of riding.
